We had the home inspected this morning. It could have been worse, but it could have been better. Evidently, there’s water leaking into the basement wall from a poorly placed gutter. This has probably been going on for some time, and it’s possible that mold is growing, or that the wall has rotted. It can’t be known until the wall is taken apart and inspected thoroughly. Also, the garage is in a very fragile state, with a sagging roof and broken support beams. It could cave in under the weight of heavy snow. The roof of the house, although sagging under the weight of the tile, is in fairly good condition. There are a few tiles that need replacing. The roof over the covered patio also needs replacing.
So there you go. I suppose it’s no big surprise, considering the age of the house. But it seems that the current owner isn’t interested in fixing anything. At this point we have to re-negotiate. It’s so hard to know what to do!

So we offered $5K less than the asking price, and for the seller to pay closing costs and realtor fees, and they accepted it!! We have a house! Now we have to have it inspected and get qualified. I can’t express how excited I am to have found this house. Whoo hoo!!

We’ve been searching for a home for the past 4 months, and I think we finally found one yesterday that beats all the rest. It’s a cute white cottage home built in 1947, about 2020 square feet. It has newly refinished hardwood floors throughout the entire main floor, except for the awesome slate tile in the kitchen. :) The kitchen is large with dark hardwood cabinets and lots of counterspace. There’s a formal dining area next to the kitchen, and the formal livingroom has a gas fireplace. There are 2 bedrooms upstairs, and I down. The downstairs needs a bit of refinishing, but there’s a large family room that just needs carpet and a huge laundry area that could easily be divided into another bedroom or office. There’s a half bath downstairs as well. Outside, there’s a huge yard, about .22 acres, although it feels bigger, and a 2 car garage. The roof looks really cool, it has a great pitch to it, and covered in wavy tile. It’s pretty cool looking, plus it should last a long time. And perhaps the best feature of all is that it is in Murray! Right at about 4800 South and 200 East. It’s on a quiet residential street with other cute, well-maintained homes. We are concerned about a couple things, one being it’s an older home, so electrical wiring and water pipes could go at anytime. We already know the furnace is old, so we are planning to have to replace that at some point. Also, it’s priced right about at our spending limit, so payments would be tight these first few months before Ben graduates. It’s managable though.
So, we’re getting pre-qualified and making an offer today!!!

It’s taken me a long time to post again, but I don’t feel very badly because I’ve only told approx 2 people about this site.
Ben and I are still looking for a house to buy. Nothing great has popped up yet. There’s a family moving out of our ward, but I think his home will be too expensive. We’ve expanded our search to include more of the western area of salt lake, but we don’t want to go too much past 32nd west.
Yesterday we went to the BYU game. It was terribly exciting with some anxious moments. The Y was ahead the whole game, until the very end. It was a disapoointing 50-51 loss in overtime. The weather was very nice though. Not too hot, not too cold, and there was enough cloud cover to keep the sun off. It got a little windy near the end, but it was just fine.
Well that’s it for today. Here’s hoping the Y does better next week.

My wonderful husband has just set up my very first website! Hopefully I’ll be able to use this site to update my far-away family about my life here in Utah. Tonight’s plan is to get to bed early because this hay fever (thanks, Mom) is killing me, and I’m exhausted!
